A Comedian’s Wife, A Serious Topic
Married to late-night talk show king Jay Leno, Mavis is a passionate activist and has been the United States’ most outspoken critic of the Taliban’s horrific treatment of women. After numerous unsuccessful attempts at getting the press involved in the issue of gender apartheid in Afghanistan, she freely admits she pulled out her biggest trump cards – her husband and her money.
A Voice for Silenced Women
Mavis Leno showed how a single, strong voice can speak for so many silenced ones, ensuring the plight of Afghan women was included in the world’s reporting. As chair of the Campaign to Help Afghan Women & Girls since 1997, she advocated for Afghan women during the brutal Taliban regime, influencing the Clinton and Bush administrations and U.S. Congress to help restore women’s human rights in the country. Her work making women’s rights a non-negotiable part of a post-Taliban Afghanistan continues today.
Join the Dialogue on Global Women’s Voices!
At the Dallas Women’s Foundation Luncheon, CNN producer and Muslim journalist Maria Ebrahimji will ask Leno about her perspectives on the diverse voices of women around the globe. Hear Leno’s heart-felt message about using her voice to help Afghan women and girls. Learn how Muslim women in North Texas are putting their voices together to help each other….And be inspired to contribute to positive change in our global community.
