  Fall 2001 Grant Recipients

The 2000 Roses Foundation, Inc. - Social Services - $15,000
For general operating expenses for this temporary group home which provides housing, counseling, life skills, career development, mentorship, and legal, dental and medical assistance to women who 1) have recently been released from the Texas Department of Corrections, 2) are in a substance abuse recovery program, and/or 3) women seeking shelter from abusive relationships and seeking independent living.

The CAPE Center (Childcare and Parenting Educator) - Social Services - $15,000
To create a childcare facility that from the outset will qualify as a Four Star Designated Vendor program and serve the mothers of Pleasant Grove community. The facility will not only provide care to and education for children 0-6, but also provide women trained in early childhood education to earn salaries commensurate with their level of education and quality of work.

Center for BrainHealth at the Callier Center - Health - $20,000
To develop a program specifically targeted at helping women who are caregivers for a husband, parent, child, or other loved one with a neurological disorder (Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease, stroke, frontal lobe disease, traumatic brain injury). Because most behavior difficulties arise from a loss of communicative abilities, education and support of successful communication will not only lessen these behaviors, helping to unburden the caregiver, but also dramatically improve quality of life for both the individual afflicted and the caregiver.

Dallas Children's Advocacy Center - Health - $10,000
To fund 20 therapy scholarships for girls. Each child will receive an average of 12-16 therapy sessions at the rate of one per week. The DCAC Therapy Program offers therapy services to victims of abuse, the non-offending parent or caretaker, siblings of the victim, and children who have witnessed a violent crime or homicide.

East Dallas Counseling Center - Basic Needs - $16,500
To fund comprehensive services to victims residing at the Mosaic Multicultural Women's Place in North Texas, an expansion of the agency's existing nonresidential family violence program. The Center concentrates on providing culturally and linguistically sensitive services in at least seven different languages (including Vietnamese, Arabic, Kurdish, Bosnian, Thai, Korean, and Laotian) to immigrant victims experiencing abuse. EDCC also educates immigrant and mainstream communities about issues relating to domestic violence and immigrant needs.

English Language Ministry - Education - $19,502
For the general operating expenses of this agency that provides quality instruction in English as a second language to non-English speaking women in East Dallas to promote responsible self-sufficiency and to bring them to the fifth literacy level.

EXCAP - Social Services - $5,712
For the Parent Aide Program that trains volunteer parent aides to work in the home with at abusive families referred by Child Protective Services, Dallas Children's Advocacy Center, and Family Outreach to break the cycle of child abuse.

Girls Inc. - Education - $20,000
To support the Career and Life Planning program, connecting girls ages 6 to 18 to ideas, resources, and concrete plans for higher education and careers, including non-traditional careers for women. The program enables girls to become economically independent, self-reliant, and contributing members of their families and communities.

Human Rights Initiative - Social Services - $10,000
To provide salary support for the Women's Issues Liaison program to meet the needs of traumatized women seeking asylum, assisting clients in dealing with issues of trauma and sexual violence in the asylum process and helping them overcome cultural or emotional barriers to cope with the consequences of political violence. This pilot program will be used as a springboard for creating a separate department to address the wide array of human rights violations from which women suffer disproportionately, including human trafficking and female genital mutilation.

Interfaith Housing Coalition - Economics - $20,000
To support the Employment Services program, providing training, guidance, and resources for homeless adults, empowering them to obtain full-time employment that will provide long-term sustainability for the family.

Jacob's Ladder - Education - $19,993
To provide start-up funding for a new program providing pre-GED and GED evening classes for TANF/Food Stamp recipients, low income, unemployed, underemployed, displaced and working women. The targets for classes are individuals with 5th-8th grade Test of Adult Basic Education test scores, considered "hardest to serve" adults.

The Magdalen House - Health - $20,000
To provide general operating support for this agency that is the only free, safe place that women can withdraw from alcohol in Dallas County. Women are able to live at Magdalen House for up to 14 days and are introduced to a 12-step recovery program.

My Guardian Angel - Health - $10,000
For the support of on-going curriculum-based grief recovery programs for female head of households involved in single parenting children who have experienced tragic loss due to divorce, death, separation and/or abandonment.

New Beginning Center - Basic Needs - $10,000
To provide basic shelter and supportive services to women and their children who are in imminent danger of abuse by their partners. This domestic violence shelter primarily serves the northeast section of Dallas County.

Planned Parenthood of North Texas - Health - $20,000
For the expansion of PPNT's colposcopy, cryotherapy, and LEEP treatment services to uninsured, low-income women residing in Dallas County by adding required medical equipment. These treatments are essential to diagnosis and treatment of conditions of the cervix that can lead to cervical cancer.

Shared Housing Center - Economic - $20,000
To fund the new program Independent Futures, with the goal of economic independence and self-sufficiency for Transitional Group Residence clients, primarily homeless single women with young children.

Vickery Meadow Learning Center - Education - $16,793
To fund the cost of a part-time Business Manager to oversee day-to-day bookkeeping and administrative and program tasks, giving the Executive Director more time to focus on program growth and development. VMLC is an adult literacy program that improves non-English speaking adults' communication and life skills so that they may function more productively in society.
