  Fall 2002 Grant Recipients

Cathedral Pre-GED Ministry of the East Dallas Cooperative Parish
Operating Expenses - $10,000; FUNDED: $5,800, Judith Tate McCall Memorial Fund

Classes (and child care) are offered on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. Content areas of instruction are reading, writing, social studies and science, and mathematics. All classes are taught by volunteer tutors. The yearly schedule follows the public school calendar. St. Matthew's Cathedral contributes classroom, office, and nursery space as well as utilities and maintenance as part of its outreach ministry.
Mission statement: to provide free quality instruction in literacy and the English language on grade levels 5 through 8 to adults, primarily women, in the East Dallas area, accompanied by free child care, so that students may progress toward employment and educational goals, including preparing for the GED test.

Collin Intervention to Youth, Inc.
CITY Family Center; "EMPOWER" - $20,000; FUNDED: $20,000

The "Empower" program targets at-risk girls ages 13-17 and their mothers in a 12-week course aimed at prevention of further risky behaviors that includes education and support through multi-family groups (weekly), family counseling (weekly) and case management services as needed.
The mission of CITY House is to strengthen the community by helping youth and their families resolve physical and emotional crises.

Community Homes for Adults, Inc. (CHAI)
CHAI Women's Vocational Project - $10,000; FUNDED: $10,000

This program assists women residents of CHAI to secure the services they need to find and retain appropriate employment. CHAI works in conjunction with several local providers of vocational support services. A few of these services include job development and placement, job training, job coaching, and "follow-along" for the life of the job.
The mission statement of CHAI is to provide services for people with mental retardation and their families. CHAI helps people with mental retardation develop their individual potential to lead meaningful lives.

Community Services YMCA
Sunset Teen Parenting Program - $20,000; FUNDED: $1,700 Laura G. Blocker Advised Fund

The program focuses on teen parents completing their high school education, while providing child care, tutoring, parenting education classes and basic life readiness skills. Throughout the day their children participate in developmentally appropriate lesson plans where they are challenged mentally and physically while at the center we provide. Parents spend quality time with their children before and after school and maintain at least a "C" average with low school absences.
The mission of the Community Services YMCA is to work with youth and their families to develop problem solving and social skills, build self-esteem and foster a sense of purpose, hope and direction.

Dallas Children's Advocacy Center (DCAC)
DCAC Therapy Program - $10,000; FUNDED: $10,000

Proposed funding supports the DCAC Therapy Program. The goal of the program is to bring hope and healing to child victims of abuse. Children receive individual talk, play and art therapy from licensed therapists trained in working with physical and sexual child abuse. Through therapy, the children work on complex issues stemming from abuse. Therapy ultimately helps reduce the psychological and emotional consequences of abuse and restores the mental health of the children.
The mission of the Dallas Children's Advocacy Center is to break the cycle of child abuse and neglect through intervention in a child sensitive environment.

Denton County Friends of the Family
Operating Expenses - $20,000; FUNDED: $20,000

Funds will be to support the general operating expenses for agency programs directed at assisting victims of relationship violence and sexual assault. The programs include a 24-hour crisis line, protective shelter, adult counseling services, child and adolescent services, advocacy, family services, sexual assault nurse examiner's program, community education, and violence intervention and prevention program.
The mission statement of Denton County Friends of the Family is to provide crisis intervention, safe shelter, counseling, support services, and advocacy for all of those impacted by domestic/dating relationship violence or sexual assault and to facilitate community awareness and involvement through education, information, and violence prevention programs.

English Language Ministry (ELM) of the East Dallas Cooperative Parish
Operating Expenses - $19,500; FUNDED: $2,500

ELM offers ESL and survival skill classes four mornings a week, accompanied by free child care for children age 3 and under. Classes include Book (reading/writing), conversation, reading comprehension, and literacy lab. Classes are held on four levels. Child care is provided to facilitate attendance and expose young children to English. All classes are taught by volunteers.
The mission is to provide quality English as a Second Language instruction to non-English speaking adults, primarily women, accompanied by free child care in order to promote responsible self-sufficiency.

Family Place, The
Southern Sector Outreach - $20,000; FUNDED: $20,000

The southern sector of Dallas County is historically a high-risk area for family violence as evidenced by a high number of domestic violence 911 calls, however, this population of victims historically has not accessed family violence services. The Family Place has developed a unique program to build trust in these neighborhoods and educate victims about the services available to them by establishing outreach offices in high-risk neighborhoods.
The mission of The Family Place is to stop domestic violence through prevention, intervention, and comprehensive services - including emergency shelter, counseling and transitional housing - that empowers families to lead non-violent, independent lives.

Girls Incorporated of Metropolitan Dallas
Operating Expenses - $20,000; FUNDED: $20,000

Funds are being requested for operating expenses of Girls Incorporated community centers. Their six centers are located in very economically disadvantaged neighborhoods in Dallas. Each of the centers' neighborhoods has traditionally had a high poverty rate, a large number of single parent families, large numbers of school-aged girls and a struggling minority community.

Magdalen House, The
Program Services - $20,000; FUNDED: $20,000

The request of funds is to help with the cost of the program and services the Magdalen House offers, which consists of offering women a free 14-day stay to withdraw from alcohol. The women are also educated on the disease of alcoholism, as well as introduced to the twelve-step program of recovery. Their needs are to continue to employ three full-time supervisors and one part-time house manager.
The Magdalen House mission statement is to offer hope to the many female alcoholics, who are still suffering, allowing everyone to progress spiritually and better serve as we travel this "Broad Highway" of life together.

New Beginning Center, Inc.
Operating Expenses - $20,000; FUNDED: $5,000, Sherry Adair Advised Fund

New Beginning Center is a domestic violence agency located in Garland, Texas and provides services to resident of Dallas County. The agency operates an outreach counseling center, emergency shelter, the Domestic Violence Prevention and Education Center, and a resale shop.
The mission of New Beginning Center is to foster an environment of safety, support, and respect for families affected by domestic violence through crisis intervention, counseling, shelter, education, advocacy, and diverse community partnerships.

New Friends New Life
Operating Expenses - $20,000; FUNDED: $20,000

New Friends New Life is seeking to expand its capacity for helping women by hiring a part-time (20-24 hrs. weekly) Licensed Social Worker. A professional on staff would enable them to increase both the quality of services offered and the number of women they are able to help. A Social Worker could help the organization better negotiate the difficult welfare system and help qualified women access available services, especially as related to education and housing. The Licensed Social Worker would work alongside the Protégé Advocate, who is a former client.
The mission of New Friends New Life is to help women escape dependency on sexually oriented businesses for employment. The organization strives to sustain long and meaningful relationships with women and their children while providing support and resources leading to self-sufficiency and a good quality of life, free from abuse, exploitation, and degradation.

Phoenix Academy of Dallas
Girls' Program - $20,000; FUNDED: $20,000

Phoenix Houses of Texas requests funds to support start-up costs for substance abuse treatment for 16 female placements in Dallas where Phoenix Houses of Texas will open one of its acclaimed Phoenix Academies. The residential school of adolescents referred because of their drug abuse will include 16 unduplicated residential treatment beds for girls, ages 13-17. Phoenix House is nearing completion of an extensive renovation of the facility. Contracts to treat these children exist or will be negotiated with several funding sources. TCADA has recently changed its funding method from "fee for service" to "unit cost", requiring all new programs to fund start-up expenses without reimbursement prior to admitting, treating, billing and reimbursing for service.
The mission of Phoenix House is to reclaim disordered lives; encourage individual responsibility, positive behavior, and personal growth; strengthen families and communities; safeguard public health; and promote a drug-free society through prevention, treatment, education and training, research, and advocacy.

Senior Citizens of Greater Dallas
Older Women's Issues Project - $20,000; FUNDED: $20,000

The Older Women's Issues Project promotes self-sufficiency and empowerment of older women through community wide seminars, one-to-one individual financial counseling, and issue advocacy efforts through the Older Women's League (OWL), and the Advocacy Group for the Elderly (AGE).
The mission of Senior Citizens of Greater Dallas is to improve the quality of life of older adults in the greater Dallas area.

Turning Point (Rape Crisis Center of Collin County), The
Operating Expenses - $20,000; FUNDED: $20,000

The Turning Point needs to fund the position of Administrative Assistant, which was previously funded by a three-year grant from VAWA (Violence Against Women Act). The grant was not renewed for this year. In this position, the staff member carries a broad range of responsibilities, which assist the entire program. These include answering crisis telephone calls, rotating the staff on-call duties for hospital accompaniment of rape survivors, bookkeeping and clerical duties of the organization, and data entry of statistics for program reports.
The mission of the Turning Point is to provide counseling, education, and advocacy for those impacted by sexual assault.

Vogel Alcove Childcare Center for the Homeless, Dallas Jewish Coalition
Parenting Support Program - $20,000; FUNDED: $10,000

The single mothers at the Vogel Alcove are dealing with generational poverty, domestic violence and homelessness. The Parenting Program provides the necessary support for these single moms to begin the recovery process from the emotional trauma of abuse and the indignity of poverty and homelessness.
The Vogel Alcove seeks to improve the lives of young children during their critical developmental years and to serve their families while homeless and through their transition to independent living. This is accomplished through the provision of high quality, free childcare and developmental services and comprehensive social services.

Wilkinson Center, The
Safe Haven - $10,000; FUNDED: $10,000

The Girls Outreach Program component of Safe Haven provides programs to girls ages 6-15 that encourage self-esteem, leadership, focus on academic skills and opportunities to meet minority women in professional roles.
The mission of The Wilkinson Center is to cooperate with people in need who desire to create a better life so they may reach their God-given potential and sustain themselves with dignity.

YWCA of Metropolitan Dallas
Operating Expenses - $20,000; FUNDED: $20,000 First Preston Management Inc. Advised Fund

The mission statement of the Young Women's Christian Association of the United States of America is a women's membership movement nourished by its roots in the Christian faith and sustained by the richness of many beliefs and values. Strengthened by diversity, the association draws together members who strive to create opportunities for women's growth, leadership, and power in order to attain a common vision: Peace, Justice, Freedom and Dignity for All People.
