Dallas Women’s Foundation Fall Grant

Purpose of Agency
AIDS Services of North Texas is dedicated to reducing the impact of HIV/AIDS on the rural and outer urban communities of North Texas through prevention, care, and advocacy. The team of volunteers and staff is committed to empowering clients through services delivered in a caring way.

Grant Proposal
Well-Women Treatment and Referral Program designed to provide medical services that are specific to HIV+ female client population. Current government funding sources will not reimburse for activities that are crucial for women living with HIV/AIDS; this includes mammograms, colposcopies for women with abnormal pap smears and bone density scans used to diagnose osteoporosis.

Purpose of Agency
To inspire and enable all young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.

Grant Proposal
Funds would support the SMART Girls program, a gender specific program for girls ages 8-17. The program focuses on issues specific to female club members and is designed to encourage healthy attitudes and lifestyles that will enable those members to develop to their full potential. Girls are given the opportunity to explore personal and societal values as they build skills for eating right, staying fit, getting good health care and developing positive relationships.

Grant Proposal

The Bridge Breast Network saves lives by linking low income, uninsured individuals to diagnostic and treatment services for breast cancer.

Grant Proposal
Funds would support the “Bridging the Gap in the African American Community” program providing information and referral services to low-income, African American women.

 

Brighter Tomorrows

Dallas Women’s Foundation Fall Grant

Purpose of Agency
To provide emergency shelter and support services to those in fear of domestic or sexual violence and to break the poverty/welfare cycle through training and assistance in obtaining employment.

Grant Proposal
Funds would support a part-time Hispanic outreach coordinator to address the growing needs of this population. Brighter Tomorrows is the sole provider of services in the area (Irving, Grand Prairie and Desoto) and the primary provider of transitional housing for victims of sexual and physical abuse. Nearly 1/3 of Brighter Tomorrow’s clients served each year are Hispanic.


Central Dallas Ministries

Purpose of Agency
To share the love of God in word, action and attitude while building genuine community in the neighborhoods where we live and work. The purpose of the L.A.W. Center program is to provide support to women and families who have nowhere else to turn for legal support.

Grant Proposal
Funds would support 1) Emergency Loan Fund to provide up to $250 in emergency loans to women escaping domestic violence and 2) Emergency Litigation Expense Fund to provide up to $250 to support litigation related expenses for women escaping domestic violence.

Purpose of Agency
To make life better for children.

Grant Proposal
Funds would provide for the partial salary of a dedicated nurse in the Adolescent/Young Adult Clinic at the Adolescent/Young Adult (AYA) clinic which is part of the Crystal Charity Ball At-Risk Children’s (ARCH) Center at Children’s. The AYA Clinic provides primary care services, gynecological exams, counseling and consultation for abuse and eating disorders, and education on menstruation, sexually transmitted disease, HIV prevention and other important topics for patients ages 11-18. The program fills a specialized niche in community health care for at-risk girls who develop special medical and social needs that are neither entirely pediatric nor adult in nature. They require more attentive, time-consuming and comprehensive care than most private physicians are able to give and may find it more difficult to locate and access a medical home.

 

Collin County Children’s Advocacy Center

Purpose of Agency
Collin County Children’s Advocacy Center takes action to identify, protect, and improve lives of abused and neglected children.

Grant Proposal
Funds would support partial salary and supplies for a full-time bilingual therapist to provide specialized therapeutic clinical services to Hispanic clients who are the child victims of sexual abuse. Therapy services would also be available to the non-offending family members of the abuse victims. Services would be offered at no cost to the client.

 

Dallas Concilio of Hispanic Organizations

Purpose of Agency
To advocate and enhance the quality of life for Hispanics through community partnerships.

Grant Proposal
Funds would support the Psyched About Science and Math program which encourages 6th grade Hispanic girls to stay in school and strive toward a career in science, math, or health. This is accomplished through a one-day workshop facilitated by Hispanic female professionals. Following the workshop, girls attend 3 field trips to organizations where they are further exposed to careers in math, health and science. The program also teaches and encourages parents to motivate their daughters to stay in school and pursue careers in math and science.

 

Friends of the Dallas Public Library

Purpose of Agency
To link information and resources to enhance the lives of Dallas residents.

Grant Proposal
Funds would support the “Born to Read” program which targets Hispanic mothers in the waiting rooms of neighborhood Parkland Clinics. Mothers would be provided information on the importance of reading, brain development and services available at the Dallas Public Libraries. . Mothers and children would be entertained with live story telling and children would be provided with a book. They are introduced to the librarian at the nearest Dallas branch and provided with library membership card applications.

 

Galaxy Counseling Center

Purpose of Agency
To promote emotional health and family well-being through counseling, education, and outreach

Grant Proposal
Funds would support the sexual abuse treatment program and 2 new components - group therapy and a support group. The program’s goal is to help women and girls cope with the effects of sexual abuse, while at the same time giving them the tools to increase future safety issues and promote healing.

 

Hope Cottage Pregnancy and Adoption Center

Purpose of Agency
Hope Cottage nurtures and builds families through education, counseling, adoption services and mentoring

Grant Proposal
“Partners in Hope” is a support program designed to empower young, at-risk single mothers and pregnant women to create and maintain a strong, healthy family. Through the emotional support provided by the program coordinator, a year-long match with a volunteer mentor, the clients access community resources, learn about parenting their baby/child, decrease their stress and meet other young moms in similar circumstances.

 

Human Rights Initiative

Purpose of Agency
Promote international human rights through local service to refugees and immigrants who have suffered human rights abuses.

Grant Proposal
Funds would support a pilot project involving immigrant women leaving domestic violence situations. Funds would support pro-bono legal services to the clients working toward their legal immigration status and obtaining a U Visa.

 

Literacy Instruction for Texas

Dallas Women’s Foundation Fall Grant

Purpose of Agency
To enhance lives and strengthen communities by raising the adult literacy rate in the Dallas metroplex.

Grant Proposal
To fund 28% of the funding to expand the “Family Literacy” program. The program targets primarily low-income Hispanic women child care givers/mothers, to teach them how to break the cycle of illiteracy in the family. The program is a gateway to LIFT's other programs - Adult Literacy and ESL classes.

 

The Magdalen House

Purpose of Agency
To provide a free, safe place where women can detox from alcohol abuse. The Magdalen House gives women residents the opportunity to become acquainted with a 12-step program and provides additional resources geared toward helping the women re-establish their life without alcohol.

Purpose of Agency
Helps women escape dependency on sexually oriented businesses for employment. The organization strives to sustain long and meaningful relationships with women and their children while providing support and resources leading to self-sufficiency and a good quality of life, free from abuse, exploitation and degradation.

Grant Proposal
Funds would support operating expenses including rent, utilities, transportation, childcare and medical and legal assistance.

 

Nexus Recovery Center

Dallas Women’s Foundation Fall Grant

Purpose of Agency
Recovery and sustained independence from alcohol and drug abuse for disadvantaged women, including women with children and adolescent females.

Grant Proposal
Funds would support the Adolescent Program which is a gender-specific treatment program designed to address the issues of female substance abusers 12-17 years old. Nexus is the only treatment center in the area that offers gender specific treatment to adolescent females.
98% of Nexus clients are medically indigent and cannot pay for treatment.

 

Oak Cliff Center for Community Studies

Purpose of Agency
Empowering Latinas through college education and community involvement.

Grant Proposal
Funds will support two programs- “Advancing Latinas to College” and “College Prep 101”, both of which encourage young Hispanic girls to attend college, expose them to a college environment and addresses parental cultural issues about girls leaving home to attend college.

Purpose of Agency
To provide support for parents as they work to raise responsible, emotionally healthy children in today's society. The mission of the Adult Basic Education program for which the funds are requested is more specifically “ to break the cycle of family illiteracy in Hispanic households”.

Grant Proposal
Funds would provide for a computer lab to support the Adult Basic Literacy program. The lab funding includes 6 desktop computers, computer workstations and chairs, a teacher desk and a chair, a networked printer and a file cabinet.

Purpose of Agency
To connect the energy of young adults, the strength o church supported institutions and the untapped resources of underserved neighborhoods to meet the evolving needs of children and youth.

Grant Proposal
To support the costs of a week-long overnight camp called “Urban Camp” strengthens girls’ physical, mental and emotional well-being by encouraging them to challenge themselves and helping them to experience success and adventure.

Purpose of Agency
Promise House stabilizes and offers hope to youth and families in crisis. The mission is achieved through crisis intervention, emergency shelter, transitional living, education, counseling, street outreach, and advocacy.

Grant Proposal
To fund salaries and benefits for three part-time childcare workers for the “Wesley Inn” program. Wesley Inn is a group home for homeless pregnant and parenting teens and their children. The program addresses the epidemic of teen pregnancy in our community by enabling residents to obtain and reside in permanent housing, increasing their skills and income, and helping them achieve greater self-determination.

Funds would support the “Elder Support” program which provides assistance to seniors in identifying needed services, including housing assistance, health care, prescription programs, and transportation.

Grant Proposal
To fund the CareerWorks Program which helps to achieve economic stability through fulfilling employment for families. It addresses the core reasons for the plight of women through 60 hours of intensive self-assessment and education. The curriculum covers the areas of: Work Motivation, Career Planning, Career Path Strategies, Working for Advancement, Understanding the U.S. Business Culture, Overcoming Barriers to Employment, and Marketing Yourself.


English Language Ministry

Purpose of Agency
To provide quality English as Second Language instruction to non-English speaking adults, primarily women, living in East Dallas, accompanied by free child care for their pre-school children in order to promote self-sufficiency.

Purpose of Agency
Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity is an ecumenical Christian housing ministry that works in partnership with very low-income families, volunteers and community sponsors who share its conviction: that all Americans have a decent, safe, and affordable place to live.

Grant Proposal
Funds would support one-third of one house for a single, female head of household and her family.
