  Faith and Philanthropy Grant Recipients FY 2004


Catholic Charities of Dallas, Inc.

Amount: $10,000

Grant Request: To provide immigration assistance and representation to immigrant women and children who are victims of crime and/or spousal abuse. A new visa category, the "U Visa" is now available to non-citizens crime victims whose testimony and assistance are needed by law enforcement officials in the prosecution of the perpetrators of violent crimes. The project will conduct community outreach about this new visa category and assist women and children who have been victims of crimes apply for this visa and other immigration relief under the Violence Against Women Act.

Agency Description: Catholic Charities Immigration Counseling Services is committed to advocating for fair and humane polices toward immigrants and to providing low cost, competent counseling and representation to low-income immigrants who reside in the Dallas area. Their primary expertise and priority are for cases involving family reunification, abused immigrant women, citizenship and deportation matters. Beyond individual leaders, and the community at large about US immigration law and the contributions of immigrants in our society.

 

Dallas Christian Women’s Job Corps

Amount: $8,500
$1,500 to support DCWJC’s participation in the Emerging Agency Foundation-Building Project, to be granted to the Center for NonProfit Management

Grant Request:
T support women in need through a process that will move them to emotional, spiritual, and financial independence within the context of their culture through networking, mentoring and training.

Agency and Program Description:
To provide a Christian context in which women in need are equipped for life and employment, and a mission context in which women help women.

 

Good Shepherd Community Center

Amount: $10,000

Grant Request:
Good Shepherd Community Center is a pre-school and daycare center that has served the same West Dallas neighborhood for thirty-nine years. Good Shepherd has a long history of providing high quality care and education for children from low income families, without passing the full cost along to their parents. Good Shepherd's primary focus is laying a solid foundation for children in order to increase their chance of success.

Agency and Program Description:
To provide quality, affordable, nurturing child care and early development education for the children of West Dallas with sensitivity to their diverse cultural needs.

 

Islamic Community Center of North Texas

Amount: $0 direct dollars
$1,500 to support Islamic Community Center of North Texas’ participation in the Emerging Agency Foundation-Building Project, to be granted to the Center for NonProfit Management

Grant Request:
To provide basic needs, access to healthcare, education and mentoring for women.

Agency and Program Description:
To provide refugee newcomers to the United States with the tools they need to lead independent, productive, and dignified lives while becoming contributing members of the Dallas area community.

 

Jacob’s Ladder

Amount: $20,000

Grant Request:
The grant request will provide funds for agency general operations. The funds are leveraged and unrestricted to support "no cost" program content for client groups with the greatest need during the year. Jacob's Ladder programs and services will continue to address women that are underserved, unemployed, working poor, sheltered, or at risk of homelessness. The service delivery model provides "host" agencies with extensive, collaborative, on-site employment training, financial literacy, educational and employment resources to prepare target populations requiring goal attainment, work skills, jobs and retention.

Agency Description:

To strengthen families in the Dallas community by offering adults educational and interpersonal skills necessary to climb the ladder toward self-sufficiency.

New Friends | New Life

Amount: $11,000

Grant Request:
To proved 80% of Social Worker’s salary.

Agency and Program Description:
To help women escape dependency on sexually oriented businesses for employment. The organization strives to sustain long and meaningful relationships with women and their children while providing support and resources leading to self-sufficiency and a good quality of life, free from abuse, exploitation, and degradation.

 

Remnant of Grace Ministries

Amount: $6,000 to Remnant of Grace Ministries
$1,500 to Remnant of Grace Ministries’ participation in the Emerging Agency Foundation-Building roject, to be granted to the Center for NonProfit Management

Grant Request:
The primary goal of FWM is to prepare at-risk young girls to adequately face the challenges of the 21st century. RoG provide opportunities to enhance and enrich these girls through scholarship, leadership, service and sisterhood. Their focus includes math, technology, and literacy. There is an emphasis on developing self-esteem and health. It is an on-going program.

Agency and Program Description:
To invest in the lives of at-risk young girls through education, cultivation and implementation of the values of the Holy Bible. Their efforts are to assure young girls maximize their full potential by developing them in every aspect: socially, physically, economically, mentally, and spiritually.

The Salvation Army

Amount: $20,000

Grant Request:
Approximately 100 minority girls ages 6-15 participate in THE cheerleading program at the Pleasant Grove Corps Community Center. This grant will expand the program to include a vital educational component specifically designed to teach modern dance and promote life skills - teaching girls how to address and face issues, such as low self-esteem, drug use, and goal establishment - in their lives and empowering them to make wise choices.

Agency and Program Description:
To preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.

 


Vickery Meadows Learning Center

Amount: $20,000

Grant Proposal:
VMLC's Family English Literacy program provides daytime English language classes to non-English speaking adults and provides educational programming for their pre-school age children. While parents become better prepared for life in this country their children become prepared for elementary school. Vickery Meadow Learning Center eliminates the barriers to learning by providing adult and children's programs at no cost, by being located in the area of need, having classes at convenient times, and on several skill levels.

Agency and Program Description:

Vickery Meadow Learning Center is dedicated to improving English literacy levels among non-English speaking adults by providing programs in communication and life skills. We do so in the belief that the ability to read, write and understand English contributes to independence, productivity and the overall well being of adult learners, their families and the greater community.

 

Dallas Habitat for Humanity

Amount: $10,000

Grant Request:
To support partial house sponsorship of $20,000 to support construction of a Habitat home through DAHFH's Women Build Department. The Women Build Department at DAHFH develops partnerships with Dallas area organizations that focus on girls and women in order to fund and build healthy, safe housing where children can flourish and grow.

In 2001, under the auspices of Women Building a Legacy (WBAL), Habitat for Humanity International challenged its 1,900 independent affiliates around the world to address the problem of substandard housing and its effects on the health and well-being of children by building homes with female construction crews. DAHFH formalized its commitment to this challenge by establishing a Women Build Department. The Women Build Department built 2 homes in 2003; 3 in 2003, 6 in 2004 and plans to fund and build 5 homes in 2005.

Agency Description:
Provides an ecumenical housing ministry in partnership with families, volunteers, and others, builds communities of hope, dignity and self-worth through the construction of quality, affordable housing and the nurture of decent, safe neighborhoods. The vision of Dallas Area Habitat is to eradicate substandard workforce housing in Dallas County. Since 1986, DAHFH has built 350 new homes as well as completing numerous repairs and remodels.
