  Spring 2002 Grant Recipients

CREW RECIPIENTS

Brighter Tomorrows - $20,000
For operating expenses for the DeSoto shelter, which offers services to victims of domestic and sexual abuse. This shelter serves the Best Southwest area (i. e., Cedar Hill, DeSoto, Duncanville, Red Oak, Glen Heights and Lancaster). Services include 24 hour shelter, food, clothing, crisis counseling, support groups, life skills, computer classes, legal advocacy, parenting classes, hospital and court accompaniment and community education.

Circle of Support, Inc. - $20,000
To support Girl S.M.A.R.T. (Science, Math, Art, Reading, Technology), a program offering an eight week, intensive summer program to young girls, ages 7-15, living in the southern Dallas area. This program will help improve low academic performance while developing and enhancing personal and social skills.

IRC (International Rescue Committee - $17,500
To help cover basic costs associated with continuing the Refugee Women and Youth Learning Center, which serves as a venue to bring together various service providers working with refugee women and youth in Dallas. IRC is currently one of the largest resettlement agencies in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, resettling about 500 refugees each year.

Low Birth Weight Development Center - $5,000
The Low Birth Weight Development Center is a unique, multi-faceted, comprehensive program designed to meet the complex psychosocial and developmental needs of high-risk, low birth weight infants, birth through three years, and their indigent parents. This is accomplished through the improvement of parenting skills, the enhancement of maternal infant bonding, infant stimulation, and the prevention of future high-risk pregnancies using a multi-disciplinary team of professionals and volunteers to provide educational, counseling, and social support services. Grant monies will provide a small contribution toward capital funds for a licensed child care facility and computer lab classroom of their own.

TI RECIPIENTS

Project SEED, Inc. - $40,000
Grant will be used to support the program at two new school locations within DISD, and study the similarities and differences in program impact with regard to grade and program advancement between girls and boys. Project Seed teaches elementary and middle school girls and boys in advanced mathematics, using Socratic pedagogy designed to help equip them for success in college-preparatory mathematics courses, reinforce the state-mandated mathematics standards, and create a positive, risk-free learning environment.

VERIZON RECIPIENTS

Goodwill Industries of Dallas, Inc. - $15,000
To provide access to technology through Goodwill's Computer Literacy program, enabling 10 women to enroll in computer classes, enhance their job skills, and increase the career choices available to them. These women will be instructed in basic and intermediate computer software, the Internet, email, and other technology skills required in today's workplace. Case management and job placement assistance will also be provided to help these women become self-sufficient, support their families, and contribute to the economy.

Grant monies will support computer and ESL classes for clients, taught on-site by El Centro College.

Vickery Meadow Learning Center - $10,000
To support morning English literacy classes to non-English speaking adults. The morning program is 90% women and most bring their preschool age children to their no cost child enrichment program. The adult learners are developing their proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language. As their skills improve, so does their confidence.
