  Spring 2003 Grant Recipients

Faith-Based Grants

Austin Street Centre (Shelter Ministries of Dallas) – We awarded $15,000 to their Women’s Work Therapy Program which enables homeless women to gain full-time employment and become self sufficient by offering life skills including: psychosocial therapy, substance abuse counseling, job seeking classes, personal hygiene classes, literacy training, parenting classes, computer training, and on-the-job training at the shelter or its thrift store. This agency is located in Dallas’ Fair Park neighborhood and is affiliated with the Presbyterian and Episcopalian denominations. This was our first grant to this agency, enabled only by the generosity of the faith based fund.

Cathedral Pre-GED (East Dallas Cooperative Parish) – We awarded $4,000 to this agency for general operations. The agency provides instruction in English as a second language on grade levels 5 through 8, accompanied by child care. This agency works in cooperation with English Language Ministries (ELM)(see below) with classes offered to those who have completed classes offered at ELM. This agency is located in East Dallas near downtown and is part of a cooperative of 13 churches from 7 Christian denominations.

Catholic Charities of Dallas, Inc. – We awarded $11,500 for their Oak Cliff Mom’s Group. This group includes immigrant women and services provided to them include classes on English literacy, aerobic exercise, and parenting as well as instruction on navigating our health, education, public transportation, and immigration systems. Legal counseling regarding immigration issues is also offered as is childcare during the classes.

Dallas Christian Women’s Job Corps – We awarded $11,000 to this agency for general operations. This agency provides services to enable women to gain employment and become self sufficient by offering case management and classes in life skills, career development, job readiness, budgeting, and computer training. This agency is located in Dallas’ Pleasant Grove neighborhood in East Dallas and is affiliated with the Baptist denomination. This was our first grant to this agency, enabled only be the generosity of the faith based fund.

English Language Ministry (ELM) (East Dallas Cooperative Parish) – We awarded $8,500 to this agency for general operations. The agency provides instruction in English as a second language on grade levels 1 through 4, accompanied by child care. This agency works in cooperation with Cathedral Pre-GED (see above). This agency is located in East Dallas near downtown and is part of a cooperative of 13 churches from 7 Christian denominations.

Interfaith Ministries of Denton, Inc. – We awarded $15,000 to this agency so they can assist women and their children who are transitioning from domestic violence shelters to their own home. Services include case management, child care, and financial assistance for utility and apartment deposits and application fees. This agency is part of a cooperative of 22 churches. This was our first grant to this agency, enabled only be the generosity of the faith based fund.

Jacob’s Ladder - We awarded $20,000 to this agency for general operations. The agency provides a ladder for low-income women to achieve self-sufficiency by offering academic and employment assessments and case management and classes on: life skills, financial literacy, work readiness, pre-GED preparedness, and GED preparedness. This agency is located in southeast Dallas near downtown and is affiliated with the Jewish denomination.

Vickery Meadow Learning Center – We awarded $15,000 to this agency for women to partake in their services which include instruction in English as a second language on grade levels 1 through 4, accompanied by childcare. This agency is located in northeast Dallas and is affiliated with the Presbyterian denomination.

YMCA – We awarded $20,000 for their teen parenting program at Sunset High School in Dallas’ Oak Cliff neighborhood. Services include parenting classes, individual counseling, crisis intervention and childcare.
