CREW GRANTS

Child Abuse Prevention Center - $20,000

( Exchange Club Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse of DFW, Inc.) Dallas Healthy Families

The purpose of the nationally accredited Dallas Health Families program is to prevent and reduce the rate of child abuse by helping families of newborns through in home visitation and other services. The program focuses on teen mothers in the highest poverty zip codes of Dallas County at the onset of pregnancy and until the child is three years old. The program also enhances school readiness in the target child, and completion of educational goals and entry in to the workforce for the parents. CAP is currently working with 32 teenage mothers and their babies in zip codes 75215, 75126, 75217, 75224, 75232, and 75241. The average age range of the mother is 16-17.

Mission statement: To improve the lives of DFW children and their families by preventing child abuse and neglect through education, prevention, and family mentoring programs.

 

Denton City County Day School - $6,887.50

This grant will offer single mothers who are reentering the work force or seeking college/training hours to further their careers or education through sliding scale childcare ‘scholarships’ for weekly fees. These scholarships will be based on financial need using the federal poverty level tables as guidelines. Single mothers will receive up to eight weeks of free childcare and an additional eight weeks of reduced fee care, based on funding.

Mission statement: To provide quality childcare for low to moderate income families in Denton County on a sliding scale basis based on family size and annual income.

 

Fred Moore Day Nursery School, Inc. - $6,887.50

This grant will allow Fred Moore to admit single mothers and students to their childcare program when they do not have the funds to pay. These sliding scale ‘scholarships’ will mean Fred Moore will not have to turn away any family struggling during the current economic hard times. Now more than ever, many single mothers are in need of better education, or are looking for a job that allows them a better life for their families. This grant will allow them the room to do so.

Mission statement: To provide the highest quality childcare at a rate affordable to low-income and single parent families. Fred Moore Day Nursery School provides a nurturing environment that develops the whole child. The school focuses on social skills, emotional development, cognitive skills, motor skills, and self help skills. Fred Moore is determined to help parents make a better life for themselves and their families.

 

Girls Incorporated of Metropolitan Dallas - $8,125

(NFTE) National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship

The goal of the Girls, Inc. National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship program is to teach entrepreneurship to low-income girls, ages 11 through 18, so they can become economically productive members of society by improving their academic, business, technology and life skills.

Mission statement: Girls Inc. encourages girls to discover their own identity, develop their potential and grow in their sense of responsibility to self, family, and community. It provides female-focused programs that empower girls to take charge of their lives.

 

SouthFair Community Development Corporation - $20,000

South Dallas Starlings Volleyball Life Skills Program

The Starlings is a free, year-round development program serving more than 300 at-risk girls in the crime-infested neighborhoods of Fair Park. Participants improve their athletic abilities while learning leadership, critical thinking and an array of life skills. Just as importantly, they partake in structured after school/summer activities during times when juvenile offenses are prone to occur. We are enhancing the future of South Dallas by shaping young women into educated, healthy, responsible leaders.

 Mission statement: To reduce the number of girls who fall victim to criminal behavior, gang involvement, drug use, AIDS and teen pregnancy. Starlings accomplishes this by rallying with parents, educators and community leaders to instill self pride, stress academic excellence and provide hope to girls who have spent their lives in hopeless situations.

 

The Family Place -$20,000

Youth Education & Prevention Services (YEPS) South Dallas

The Family Place is requesting $20,000 to expand their successfully proven teen dating violence prevention program into South Dallas high schools, specifically targeting African American teenage girls.

Mission statement: To eliminate family violence through intervention and proactive prevention, extensive community education, advocacy and assistance for victims and their families.  

 

TEXAS INSTRUMENTS GRANTS

 

Advanced Placement Strategies, Inc. - $40,000

1) Three-session booster program for 14 participants in the 2003-2004 Gender Equity Project program sponsored by DWF, 2) An administrator-counselor information program for administrators and counselors who work at the same schools as those of the teachers who are participating in the 2003-2004 Gender Equity Project program, 3) A Gender Equity Project for 12 DISD pre-AP Science teachers.

Mission statement: To maximize the number of students passing Advanced Placement AP® exams by planning, implementing, and managing AP and Pre-AP™ incentive programs within the State of Texas.

 

The College of Education at The University of Texas at Arlington - $11,960

Women of TI Advised Fund

The institute will provide teachers with the opportunity to: Develop an understanding of the history and current culture of women in science, Demonstrate the ability to integrate the role of women scientists into science instructions, Explore and apply a variety of instructional strategies and resources appropriate for teaching science emphasizing gender equity, Explore the use of technology as a vehicle for classroom instructions, Demonstrate proficiency at locating and analyzing appropriate reference materials and professional resources that enable one to remain current in the field of gender equity in science. The institute will provide teachers with support throughout the year, and it will allow them to network with teachers throughout the Metroplex.  

Mission statement: The Metroplex Area Gender Equity Institute is an initiative designed to equip area science teachers with gender-equitable teaching strategies, knowledge of women in science, and female-friendly hands-on science lessons.

 

 

FAITH & PHILANTHROPY GRANTS

 

English Language Ministry, Inc.

Operating Expenses ($17,500)

ELM offers ESL and survival skill classes four mornings a week, accompanied by free child care for children aged 3 years and under. Classes include reading, writing, conversation, and literacy computer lab. Classes are held on four levels. Free child care is provided to facilitate attendance and expose young children to English. All classes are taught by volunteers, mostly area church members.

Mission statement: To provide quality English as a Second Language instruction to non-English speaking adults, primarily women, accompanied by fee child care in order to promote responsible self-sufficiency.

 

Interfaith Housing Coalition

Transitional Housing Program for Homeless Families ($10,000)

Offering 90-day and 12 month programs, Interfaith provides furnished apartments, job counseling, budget training, and life skills. Our Children's Program offers after-school care, tutoring, evening classes, a full-day summer program, and enrichment activities. In addition, on-site psychological counseling is available for both parents and children. Interfaith families develop skills that will serve them for a lifetime. The program strives to be the "hands of Christ", sharing compassion in very practical and personal ways, to homeless families.

Mission statement: Faith-based, privately-funded Interfaith Housing Coalition provides transitional housing, training, and support services for Dallas area homeless parents and children. Our program empowers families to rebuild their lives and become self-sufficient.

 

 

New Friends | New Life

To provide 80% of Social Worker Salary ($7,500)

Mission statement: New Friends New Life helps women escape dependency on sexually oriented businesses for employment. The organization strives to sustain long and meaningful relationships with women and their children while providing support and resources leading to self-sufficiency and a good quality of life, free from abuse, exploitation and degradation.

 

Shelter Ministries of Dallas, d/b/a Austin Street Centre

Work Therapy Program for Women ($20,000)

The Women's Work Therapy Program is intended to provide economic self-sufficiency to homeless women in a unique psychosocial rehabilitation program, teaching the skills needed to obtain fulltime employment. The program includes job skills training, parenting skills training, grooming skills, socialization skills and overall life skills to women who moved from Austin Street's "shelter" into our Pathway House. The program provides the skills to the most needy in order that they may support themselves, as well as their children.

Mission statement: The Centre's primary purpose for existence is to offer emergency shelter and related services to the homeless person in a compassionate Christian community, so that the person in need might be better able to make responsible choices and changes in their lives.

 

YWCA of Metropolitan Dallas

YWCA/Citigroup Financial Empowerment Program ($20,000)

The YWCA/Citigroup Financial Empowerment Program consists of six workshops that provide low-income women with fundamental financial knowledge and skills to better manage their personal finances. Women who complete all six workshops receive a free savings account and may also qualify to receive up to $500 per year of matching savings from the YWCA.

Mission statement : To improve and enrich the lives of all women by providing critical services and removing barriers to success. We envision a world where each woman can achieve her dreams. As a result our children, our families, our communities and our future will be stronger.

Girls Inc. Amex Donor Designated - $5,000

University of North Texas , Division of Equity & Diversity - Patricia Houck Fund - $15,000

UNT's Division of Equity and Diversity is committed to executing the mission of the university whereby a supportive environment for a culturally diverse faculty staff, and student body is achieved. A welcoming and inclusive environment should be provided for everyone.  

Mission statement: UNT's Division of Equity and Diversity proposes a one-day seminar to take place on the UNT campus in Denton. The Seminar will be designed to build capacity for the lesbian community by extending knowledge on women's critical issues for persons who are lesbian, bisexual and transgender, as well as their allies.

 

AVANCE - Patricia Houck Fund - $10,000

For storage cabinets ($1,400); 3 computers ($3,450); $5,150 operating expenses.

Mission statement: To create a learning environment for children through parent involvement, maximizing educational retention and achievement for Dallas Hispanics.  

 

Magdalen House - Patricia Houck Fund $10,000

For wish list items ($3,000) agency to choose (couches, dishwashers, dressers, lawn mower); operating expenses ($5,000); technical assistance – development ($2,000).

Mission statement: The Magdalen House provides a free, temporary residence to assist women with a non-medical detox from alcohol.

 

International Women’s Democracy Center - $20,000

Pat Rosenthal Fund ($5,000), Kate Wilson Davis Fund (5,000) and DWF Funds ($10,000)

The International Women’s Democracy Center was established to strengthen women’s global leadership through training, education, networking, and research in all facets of democracy with a particular focus on increasing the participation of women in public policy, politics, and decision-making within their own governments.

 Mission statement : The Pipeline Project is a program specifically designed to train young women, ages 18-35, in the skills necessary to take active roles in policy and decision-making in the public/private sector in their own communities.  

 

EMERGING AGENCY GRANTS

 

Dallas Furniture Bank - $8,000.00

To provide operating support for the start-up phase of the organization. The Dallas Furniture Bank will collect and warehouse useable, basic household furniture - cribs, beds, high chairs, dressers, sofas, tables and chairs - through donations from the furniture industry, businesses, hotels, motels and individuals. The agency will partner with other social service agencies to identify clients in need of furniture. Funds will support the maintenance of a donated truck, rent, and basic expenses for warehouse space, salaries for a driver, administrator, and assistant.

Mission statement: To provide furniture that meets basic living needs of families and individuals who are transitioning out of homelessness, or to others whom are in need.

 

Dominion Training & Support Center - $2,000.00

To provide general operating expenses of the agency. Their primary program is called "Get Ready Set Go" and is intended to provide free comprehensive and certified computer software and operating system/network training for women with little or no computer skills. The focus of the program is to equip TANF recipients with the skills to either eradicate their unemployment status or position them for promotion in their current jobs. This collaborated effort of referral and training is designed to provide opportunities for clients to successfully move from welfare to self-sufficiency.

 Mission statement: To provide free and inexpensive computer training to disadvantaged, unemployed women who face social and economic barriers that prevent them from succeeding in the work environment due to lack of computer skills.

 

Garden of Gethsemane Center, Inc. - $1,000.00

Funds are being requested for general operating expenses. Needs were identified for a vehicle for venting and receiving support through a faith-based women’s conference, for positive and constructive dialogue on women's issues and for the conference to be reproduced at other churches.

Mission statement: To move from dependence to in dependence, from oppression to being empowered, from poverty to economic stability, from invisibility to being visible in society and from being consumers to being contributors, as they identify and accept the significance of their life in God's plan.

 

Grace Miracle Works - $10,000.00

Grace Miracle Works intends to employ two part-time caseworkers who will be responsible for identifying and assisting women and children with no other source for aid. Individuals have been identified to fill these positions. This request would pay the part-time salaries for the two case workers for six months.

 Mission statement: To improve and enhance the lives of those in crisis by meeting their basic needs, thereby transforming their lives in a positive, meaningful way.

 

Higher Crown of Glory Ministries, Inc. - $2,500.00

To fund an abstinence education program called Save the Best for First, and the Cotillion Ball at the end of the program. Funding will also provide scholarships for girls whose families cannot afford the tuition.

Mission statement : To enlighten and inform youth about the perils, peer pressure and temptations in society. Also, that abstinence from sexual activity is the only certain way to avoid illegitimate births and sexually transmitted diseases.

 

Insight Community Associates/DBA Mission of Excellence Counseling and Training Center - $2,500.00

Insight Associates will provide one - 10 week session on abstinence education to thirty (30) girls ages 10-18, to deter risky behavior related to teenage pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, substance abuse and criminal activity.

Mission statement : To empower the disadvantaged families living in South Dallas/Fair Park area by providing social, health, education and economic services for self sufficiency.

 

Passages - Life training for Girls - $8,000

Passages - Life Training for Girls guides girls through successful pre-and post-adolescence in a manner that results in academic, personal, and professional successes. Three programs offer age-specific training and coaching for girls ages 9-17, as they transition from young girls to young women.

Mission statement: Through a 10-step, comprehensive programs, supported by community and business leaders, Passages - Life Training for Girls develops the "whole" girl, preparing her to make a successful transition from childhood into adolescence and on into early adulthood. Girls emerge from this experience as responsible, confident young ladies of high character and integrity, aware of, and prepared to reach their highest personal potential at every stage of life.

 

Training for Excellence - $8,000.00

To fund the Teen Mentoring Leadership Development Program (TMLDP) which is a community-based, 6-month program that is designed to help teens in Dallas County increase their chances of being productive members of society by eliminating unhealthy, risky behavior and replacing it with creative, educational activities pointing them to their future. Three primary areas of learning for the participants will be: abstinence, alternatives to substance abuse, and guidance on planning for the future with a focus on college.

 Mission statement: To provide the highest level of professional life skills training with an urban community setting to the disadvantaged, underserved and the unemployed.

 

North Texas Transformations, Inc. - $8,000.00

Funds are requested for general operating expenses. Transformations is an organization that works with individuals to prepare them for the work place. Transformations provide resume preparation, interviewing techniques, and clothing for both the interview and for the actual job, computer training, and GED test preparation. Transformations follow individuals during the first 6 months of employment to ensure success on the job.

Mission statement: To promote economic self-sufficiency and personal growth for women by helping them develop basic business skills, a strong work ethic, confidence and self-esteem in the work place.
